When you evaluate the lacrosse talent on Long Island many people around the country think of the male lacrosse landscape. However, the Girls talent on Long Island is unparalleled. I was given the opportunity to attend the practice for the Under-Armour Girls Long Island Teams on Thursday September 24th. I was blown away by the incredible high level of talent that will be representing Long Island on October 17th and 18th weekend at the UA Event in Virginia. This event has teams coming from all across the United States to represent their regions to compete for the bragging rights as the best in the US.
Long Island has two teams representing two different age groups, the Class of 2021 and 2022 future high school graduates are the Highlight Team, while the Class of 2023 and 2024 future high school graduates are the Command Team. Each team has players from all over the island. The highlight team will be coached by Northport Girls Head Coach Carol Rose along with Long Beach Girls Head Coach Rachel Ray. The Command Team is coached by Eastport South Manor Head Coach Becky Thorn and Club Director Jerry Caramelli.
After watching the girls warm up with some odd man drills, I got to watch the two teams scrimmage for an hour. The Highlight Team (21/22) were lead at the circle by Midfielders Maddigan Miller (2021 Bayport, Stanford Commit), Madison Taylor (2022 Wantagh, Northwestern Commit) and Maureen Duffy (2021 Westhampton, UVA Commit). The fourth midfielder off the bench was Ella Cabrera (2022 Northport) who is presently making her college visits deciding between UNC, Florida, UVA and Duke. Absent on this particular day was Midfielder Alexandra Hopkins (2021 Garden City, Yale Commit), Nikki Mennella (2021 Smithtown West, Hofstra) and Summer Agostino (2021 Ward Melville, Boston College Commit). During the scrimmage, it became apparent the speed of the game is where the older team, Highlight, excelled. However the younger squad, Command, held their ground and did not back down one bit.
The Highlight Team (21/22) is lead on Defense by some lockdown goaltenders. If you’re an aspiring goalie, find time to watch these 2 Goalies, Katie Vahle (2021 ESM, ASU Commit) and Emily Lamparter (2021 Mt Sinai, Maryland Commit). These two young ladies put on an absolute goaltending clinic in the scrimmage. Each goalie making save after save, the Command Team peppered the goalies and both Katie and Emily did not disappoint. Helping these stellar net-minders were defensive standouts Emily Scorcia (2022 Bayshore), Alexis Niblock (2021 Bayport, USC Commit), Celeste Forte (2021 ESM, Florida Commit), Natasha Yajadda (2022 Sayville, UPenn Commit) and Dani Brady (2021 Smithtown East, Maryland). Filing up the net during the scrimmage were attackers Brooke Hoss (2021 Sayville, Penn State Commit), Emma LoPinto (2021 Manhasset, Florida Commit), Erin Schaefer (2021 Sayville, Stanford Commit), Alayna Costa (2021 Smithtown East, Johns Hopkins). Along with the attackers, were Morgan Zimmerman (2021 Sachem East, Colorado Commit), Abigail LoCascio (2022 St Anthonys, Northwestern), and Megan Kitagawa (2022 Syosset). Missing from the scrimmage was recent Duke Commit Ava Biancardi (2022 St Anthonys, Duke).
The skill that these young ladies possess was an absolute pleasure to watch. We wish Coach Rose and Coach Rays girls the best of luck in Virginia.
The Command Team (23/24) were not intimidated in competing against the older Highlight Team (21/22). The level of talent that Long Island will be bringing to Under Armour will be quite impressive. These young girls will be lead at the circle by Paris Penagopoulos (Friends Academy), Keira Rooney (Bayport), Kylee Colbert (North Shore), Joely Caramelli (Massapequa), Lacey Downey (West Babylon), and Kate Timarky (Middle Country). Rounding out the Command midfield will be Emilia Retzlaff (Ward Melville), Maria Forte (Eastport South Manor) and Jessica Giller (Massapequa).
The defense for the Command team is lead by two excellent goaltenders Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point), and Shae Lembo (St Anthonys). Both of these young goaltenders saw plenty of rubber in the 60 minute scrimmage. The defenders keeping the opponent out of the fan are, Alyssa Deacy (Comsewogue), Bridget Valentine (Massapequa), Brianna Wendling (Bethpage), Amanda Ettinger (Seaford), and Brynn Gardner (Mattituck). Missing at the scrimmage was Mia Fernandes (Longwood). The offensive attack was lead by Katie Clare (Bayport), Delaney Radin (Long Beach), Taylor Hoss (Sayville), Lea Flobeck (Mt Sinai) and Eva Ingrilli (Wantagh).
My money is on these young girls in this years Under Armour Classic. Good luck girls!
