This past Saturday was the first week of the second annual girls LILJ Winer Box League ‘WBL.’ The girls bantam league ‘BBL’ is primarily made up of the 2026 and 2027 FLG & Blue Devil club lacrosse teams, as well as GC Tradition’s 2026/2027 team. The high school league has a total of 11 teams in the league, and six of them are high school teams. These teams include South Side, Garden City, Sacred Heart, Manhasset, Long Beach, and Syosset. The box league provides players with another outlet to get a stick in their hands throughout the winter and get the competitive juices flowing. It’s very fast paced and definitely more of an offensive league. There’s been some high scoring games this first week so let’s analyze each of the games.
Tradition vs. FLG 2026 Navy Winter
This game was a quality win for Tradition over a very solid FLG 2026 squad. Some of the stars of the game for Tradition were Michaela Molgano who had five goals and three assists, Kiera Ruoff who scored four goals, and Sienna Nicolosi and Avery Smith who each scored three goals. Caitlyn Gilmartin led FLG with two goals and two ground balls.
FLG 26/27 Blue Devils Winter vs. FLG 2026 Navy Winter
The second of two consecutive games for FLG 2026 Navy saw them come away victorious in this game. Samantha Van Gelder had a game high five points for Navy, scoring three goals and dishing out two assists. Her teammate Caroline O’Connell added four goals as well. Emily Caputo was in the net for navy and racked up nine saves and a 64 percent save percentage. The Blue Devils were led by Olivia Zehil with three goals, and got 15 saves from goalie Julia Hipperling.
FLG 2027/26 White Winter vs. FLG 2027 Navy Winter
FLG Navy had a huge offensive showing in this one. They posted a league high 26 goals on the day. It was a total team effort as seven different players scored multiple goals. Olivia Mulada and Isabella Fiorelli combined to score 10 goals. Madeline DiRusso added three goals and three assists. Ava McDonald also scored three goals and had three ground balls.
High School Winter Box League
Spartans vs. Garden City
A competitive game between Garden City and the Spartans which is a team of players from Sacred Heart saw GC get by with a 13-8 win. Meghan Rode and Grace Hopkins combined to score eight goals to help give GC the win. They also got great play from their two goalies Amanda Grimes and Cecelia Van Blenis. The two of them had seven saves each. Kaylee Fravert was leading scorer for the Spartans with three goals.
Long Beach vs. South Side
The Anchors and the Cyclones played a great game that was back-and-forth the entire way. This one ended up in an 18-18 tie after South Side got a goal in closing seconds to even it up and avoid the loss. Avery Testa and Emily Iacobelis were a dynamic duo that couldn’t be stopped. They each scored seven goals to put the Cyclones on their back. Despite giving up 18 goals, Callie O’Connell had 13 saves to deny Long Beach the opportunity to pull away. Delany Radin was on a scoring tear for Long Beach with 9 goals which was a game-high.
Manhasset vs. Liberty Black 2025
Manhasset was on a scoring rampage in this one. It should be noted that this Liberty Black club team is made of all freshmen, so it was nice to see them competing against an elite varsity team. They showed a lot of fight but the age and experience was just too much for them to overcome. Manhasset’s Alexis Morton had 11 points, scoring six times and adding five assists. Ashley Newman and Alexandra Schneider each had six points, and Tatum Goettelmann had five. Arcangela Haffner was Liberty Black’s leading scorer with three goals.
Syosset vs. Liberty Black 2024
The varsity squad for Syosset went up against a short-handed Liberty Black team and was able to take this one 22-12. Leah Kaufer had a remarkable game, scoring nine goals to lead the team. Megan Kitagawa scored four goals, and sophomore Katelyn Lee added three. Liberty Black was short-handed, but of the players on their team Jane Pfeiffer scored twice to lead the team.
YJ Swarm vs. FLG Winter
The last game of the day was a great one between the two club teams. FLG had a lead in the first half but the Yellow Jackets came back to win 14-13. Avery Testa could not be stopped for the Yellow Jackets. She scored seven goals which was a game-high. They also got good goaltending from Mackenzie Caldwell who had 12 saves. Brianna Bellando of Farmingdale scored five goals for FLG which led the team.
