LILJ Girls Winter Box League Recap: Week 3

It’s a new year and the Girls Winter Box League returned for week 3 where there were some great performances on display. We had a game winning goal in one game, a 12 goal performance in another, multiple games with 10 plus saves by the goalies, and three games decided by three goals or less. Here’s a recap of all nine games that took place in the bantam league and the high school league.

Bantam League ‘BBL’

FLG Blue Devils 26/27 Winter vs. FLG 26/27 White Winter

This matchup between the Blue Devils and FLG was a nail bitter. Both teams really brought their A-game  and traded leads throughout the entire contest. Ultimately it was FLG 2027 White that came away with a 6-5 win thanks a to a game winning goal by Emma Titus. In total the six goals by FLG White were scored by six different players. White also got three ground balls from Lyla Droskoski which was tops on the team. Ashlyn Burst had one goal and three ground balls to lead the Blue Devils.

FLG Blue Devils 26/27 Winter vs. Tradition Winter

One of the top teams in the bantam league is Tradition due to their unbelievable offense. They came away with a big win in this one, posting 25 goals. Michaela Molgano had an unforgettable game, scoring 12 goals which is a new record in the box league. Her teammate Ciara Hegerty also had a great all around game with a stat line of four goals, two assists, and three ground balls.

FLG 27 Navy Winter vs. FLG 26 Navy Winter

The battle between the 26’s and 27’s of FLG saw this game go to the the 27’s by a score of 18-5. Olivia Mulada had a great game for the 27’s, scoring six goals and scooping up four ground balls. Isabella Fiorelli and Kailyn Mastrogiovanni also made major contributions in the win. Isabella was a beast in all fazes of the game, finishing with four goals, three assists, and two ground balls, and Kailyn was also a ground ball machine, racking up four. On the other side it was Caitlyn Gilmartin who had two goals and a ground ball to lead the 2026 team.

High School league ‘WBL’

Long Beach Winter vs. Manhasset Winter

In the first of two straight games for Manhasset they defeated Long Beach by a score of 19-10. Manhasset jumped out to a lead in the first half and they managed to retain their lead the entire way. Cate Ledar and Mia LoPinto had great games on both sides of the floor for Manhsset, scoring goals and racking up to the ground balls to contribute to the win.

Manhasset Winter vs. Team Pink Winter

Manhasset played in their second consecutive game and managed to get their second consecutive win. This one went right down to the wire, but they were able to escape with an 11-10 win over Team Pink. They outscored them 7-6 in the first half which proved to be just enough to get the win with both teams scoring four goals in the second half. Both teams played a competitive game giving themselves a great chance to win. Ashley Newman and Shea Panzik each had three goals, and Caitlin Barrett recorded six points by dishing out five assists and scoring a goal. The duo of Lauren Perfetto and Emily Haugen combined for five goals and four ground balls for Team Pink.

YJ Swarm vs. Liberty Black 2024

Liberty Black entered this game looking for their first win of the season. They took on a very formidable opponent in YJ Swarm, but a 16 goal game by the team was more than enough to get a win. Liberty Black had five players score at least two goals. Kendal Morris and Elizabeth Kenney scored four goals each which led the team. Morris also added two assists and two ground balls. Caitlin Kenney also scored two goals and had three ground balls. Despite the loss for YJ Swarm, Avery Testa had an awesome game with five goals which was a game-high.

Liberty Black 2025 vs. Spartans 

The Young Guns from Liberty Black had a tough task going up against the Spartans who are one of the best teams in the box league. They gave them a fight but the Spartans came away victorious 14-5. A great game by Catherine Bendowski helped lead them to victory. She scored four goals and added an assist for a five point game. Her teammate Kaylee Fravert also tallied three goals and three ground balls in the win. On the opposite side the five goals scored by Liberty Black were scored by five different players, showing a well balanced offensive attack.

Syosset Winter vs. Spartans 

The Spartans were looking to go 2-0 on the day after picking up a win in their first game. Syosset certainly didn’t make it easy on them and this game went right down to the wire. The Spartans had a lead but Syosset was able to close within one with just a few minutes remaining. A couple of late insurance goals for the Spartans was enough for them to come away with a 15-12 win. Catherine Bendowski was tops in goals for the Spartans with four, but they also got two a goals each from Kyra Browne, Kaylee Fravert, and Shannon Maier. Charlotte Browne was also a ground ball machine, scooping up 6. In the goal for the Spartans was Caitlin Boden who notched 15 saves which was also a big difference maker in them getting the win. Leah Kaufer scored four goals for Syosset, and they also got five points and five ground balls from Meghan Kitagawa, and five ground balls from Mallory Ngitngit.

South Side Winter vs. FLG Winter

In the final game of the day South Side picked up a win against FLG by a score of 17-7. The first half was very competitive with South Side leading 8-4 at halftime. They pulled away in the second half, outscoring FLG 9-3. The dynamic duo of Avery Testa and Emily Iacobellis  played outstanding. Testa had a stat line of seven goals and five ground balls, and Iacobellis finished with five goals and one assist. Demmerle Hammel and Caitlin Haggerty also scored three goals a piece. Mackenzie Creagh was in the net for South Side and recorded 10 saves in the win. Sisters Cameron Labriola and Addison Labriola combined for four goals and five ground balls on the opposing side.
