No. 23 Ranked Rocky Point Lady Eagles Team Preview

Rocky Point enters the 2022 season fresh off of playing in the LILJ High School Winter League. Last spring they went 11-3 and appeared in the playoffs where they lost in the first round to Comsewogue. They are coached by Mike Sanchez who says that their success this season will be defined by six simple words. “We will do whatever it takes”. The team has a mix of talented upperclassmen that are returning this season, and young guns who will come together to try to make this season one to remember.

On the offensive end the attack unit will be spearheaded by Grace Curtin (Florida Southern), Lindsey Lucia (LIU), and Mckenzie Moller. The trio combined to tally 55 points last season. Some key returning players to their midfield unit are MaryKate Abernathy (Stony Brook), Victoria Curreri (Iona), and Sophia Wood (Saint Leo). Last season they totaled 42 points amongst the three of them. Between the collection of talent and the cohesiveness, this team will have the ability to have some very high scoring games.

A few key players from last year’s team that will be missed are on the offensive end are Emmarose Hansen, Kelly Logue, Kaleigh Wilgeroth, and Sophia Wood. All of them played a significant role in the offense that Rocky Point ran last season.

The defense will be anchored by seniors Mia Negus (Western Connecticut) and Ashley Olsen, and juniors Emilie Schultz (Fairleigh Dickinson) and Olivia Van Dyke. They’ll be playing in front of junior goaltender Alexa Kuhn who will be the starting goalie this season, replacing 2021 graduate Jenika Cuocco. Kuhn is coming off a strong winter league in which she recorded 32 saves and had a 52 percent save percentage.

The winter league also provided valuable experience for a number of young guns who are going to have an opportunity to potentially see some minutes this year. Players like Violet Freebody, Sidney Woods, Taylor Bigbie, and Kylie Lamoureux are all freshmen and had a chance to play in the winter league. Freshman Breezy Henke may also see some time as the back-up goaltender. Fiona Vu is also a freshman that may get minutes this season.

A few notable alumni that did a lot while part of the Rocky Point lacrosse program are Rachel Ray and Brianna Lomonto.

This season the Eagles have a handful of notable match-ups on their schedule that will make for some great games against some of Suffolk’s elite teams. They have home games against Sayville (3/26), Bayport (3/29), and West Babylon (4/9). Rocky Point will also play at Comsewogue (4/12) in a rematch of last years’ playoff game, and at Mt. Sinai (5/5). They also have an inter county game against Long Beach (5/9) to conclude the regular season where they will honor their seniors on senior night.
