No. 12 Ranked Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks

The Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks are back following a 2021 season that saw them appear in the county championship game where they were defeated by Manhasset. The majority of the team is back and they are looking to make this a very successful season. Cold Spring Harbor has seen a lot of success in recent years, three-peating as state champions in ’15, ’16, and ’17. They are led by Head Coach Dennis Bonn who shared his thoughts on the upcoming season and what will be a very difficult schedule for the Seahawks. A note for 2022 CSH Moves into Conference D for the NY State Championship Playoffs.

“We return almost every starter, and their backup, except the 1st midfield and one defenseman. Our schedule will be a gauntlet…non-league games vs Syosset, Garden City, Rye, Yorktown, and Huntington…league games vs Manhasset, South Side, and Bethpage just to name a few. As always, staying healthy will also be key.” -Dennis Bonn, Head Coach, Cold Spring Harbor

Two of the starters at attack are seniors Luke Giarrapputo and Jake Rogers. Giarraputo is a very strong finisher and has great vision to find his teammates. He finished last season with 23 goals and 21 assists for 44 points. Rogers compiled 19 points along with 26 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. They are joined by midfielder CJ Reilly (Michigan) and FO/do-it-all midfielder Max Hawkinson (Rutgers). Reilly gave the team 20 points and 32 ground balls. Hawkinson is the team’s primary face-off man and won 167 out of 233 face-offs for a 71% winning percentage. In addition to his great winning percentage, Hawkinson also added nine goals. Expect a breakout year for Hawkinson.

The Seahawks had an excellent defense last year and that should once again be the case in 2022 with the return of seniors Jesse Phelan (Dartmouth) and Patrick Pisano (Yale). They are both elite defensemen and combined for 66 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers. Pisano is the reigning Nassau County co defenseman of the year. They will be anchored in the cage by senior goalie Spencer Will (Amherst) who is one of the top goalies on the island. Overall the Seahawks allowed just 77 goals the entire season which ranked towards the top of Nassau County in fewest goals allowed.

Although most of the team is back for the 2022 season, four key players from the class of 2021 are Will Spehr, Ben Bruno, Hunter Gagne, and Cole Longo. Spehr and Gagne were a huge part of the offense, accounting for a combined 74 points. Bruno was also a major factor, scooping 36 ground balls and causing 9 turnovers to go along with 12 goals. Longo also added 16 ground balls.

Coach Bonn says it’s too early to tell if any young guns will see the field this season, but acknowledges that the freshman class is talented and deep.

As stated by coach Bonn the Seahawks have a schedule that features some very tough teams. Some of their marquee games against Long Island opponents are as followed:

  • Syosset @ Cold Spring Harbor (4/1)
  • Cold Spring Harbor @ Huntington (4/4)
  • Bethpage @ Cold Spring Harbor (4/6)
  • Cold Spring Harbor @ Garden City (4/14)
  • Cold Spring Harbor @ Manhasset (5/4)
  • South Side @ Cold Spring Harbor (5/12)
