The Supreme Lacrosse Academy put together another stellar training experience for girls laxers from around the island. This training series is geared towards preparing 2030 to 2026 players for the varsity level by taking part in an up-tempo, team-oriented, and competitive practice environment. In the midst of getting better, this series is a great opportunity for these players to get exposure from the Long Island Lacrosse Journal too. Below is a recap of Sunday’s High School tune-up and a list of players who came out to get better!
The theme of Sunday’s training session was to compete. When you play any varsity sport, the compete increases to another level. In order to best prepare the athletes at our clinic, we brought the Supreme Lacrosse Academy in, lead by St. Anthony’s girls assistants Corey Winkoff & Christian Michaels, to demonstrate and execute a competitive practice environment. Below is a list of drills and a purpose for running those drills from Sunday’s session.
2v2 Friar Drill.
PURPOSE
- Teach two-man game principles
- Controlling your defender when balls in your stick
- Reading the defense when coming off-picks
- Off-ball actions to create space and advantages
- Variations in defending a two-man game
- Communicating for success
3v2 Bulldog Drill
PURPOSE
- Being the first to react when the ball hits the group
- GBs inside the eight-meter
- Making saves on tight shots
- Playing in tight spaces
- Using creative solutions to get shots on goal
- Getting the ball to space for an easy clear
- Defending odd-man situations
5v4 Continuous
PURPOSE
- Defending a 5v4 fast-break
- Goalie communication in 5v4
- Stopping ball and properly rotating
- Creating shorter recoveries in odd-man situations
- Getting sticks in passing lanes
- Generating high percentage shots in 4-passes or less in transition
- Off-ball actions
- Not letting 1 play 2 off-ball on offense
6v6 and 5v5 Pick-up
PURPOSE
- Using position-less lacrosse to develop more complete lacrosse players
- Transitioning from offense to defense
- Off-ball play
- Using ball-movement + actions to create advantages
- Have some fun + competing at the same time!
3v2 West Genny
PURPOSE
- Getting ahead of the ball in transition
- Getting in the whole, playing inside out on defense
- Off-ball positioning to generate high percentage shots
- Finishing in tight + working for great shots
- Outlets from goalies to create transition
Sixes
PURPOSE
- Making everyone a midfielder to get conditioning
- Using ball movement in transition vs. running with it
- Having fun while competing
