Plainedge Blows Out Mineola in Battle of the Undefeated

The Plainedge boys’ lacrosse team went on the road and crushed Mineola 14-6 to hand the Mustangs their first loss. The Red Devils have outscored opponents 100-22 through six games this season.

Caden Mora got the scoring started for Plainedge under two minutes in and that lead held until just under four

Cminutes to go in the first quarter when Tommy Renner tied it up.

In the final minute of the quarter, Plainedge went on a run. Goals from Braden Donnellan, Jake Anglim, Mora and Ryan Steckman-Buck shocked the Mineola crowd and gave the Red Devils a 5-1 lead at the end of the first.

The Mustangs tried to battle back in the second. Marcos DaSilva pulled Mineola within three just 58 seconds into the second quarter but Plainedge kept its foot on the gas.

Mora completed that hat-trick to make it 6-2 and a few minutes later, Anglim found Donnellan in front to make it 7-2.

Renner responded 15 seconds later with his second game but Travis Acquilino scored a behind-the-back to make it an 8-3 game going into halftime.

The Red Devils picked up right where they left off in the second half. Donnellan stole a clearing attempt from Mineola goalie Eric Rosati and deposited it in the empty cage. A couple of minutes later, long-pole defender Tom Twomey found himself in the offensive end and connected off a pass from Mora to make the score 10-3.

Anthony Hylton powered through contact from Plainedge goalie Chris Santacroce to score but the Red Devils scored twice more before the end of the third quarter to take a 13-4 lead into the fourth.

After Acquilino became the third Red Devil with a hat trick with a little over five minutes to go, Mineola two late goals on Plainedge backup goalie Mike Yakovich to pull within single digits, 14-6.

Mora, Donnellan and Acquilino notched hat tricks for Plainedge. Anglim, Twomey, Mike DeMatteo and Jack O’Connor scored one goal apiece. Acquilino added three assists while Donnellan, Anglim and Twomey had a helper each. Santacroce got the win for the Red Devils.

Renner scored a hat trick for Mineola while DaSilva, Hylton and Connor McLaughlin also scored. Chris Feathers and James Franz were each credited with an assist. Rosati took the loss for the Mustangs.

With its undefeated record still intact, Plainedge visits Malverne/East Rockaway on May 22. Meanwhile, Mineola will look to bounce back on May 22 on the road against Division.
