Landing at number 17 in the LILJ top 26 preseason rankings it’s the Islip Buccaneers of Suffolk Class C. The 2025 season saw them win 10 games which was enough to secure a playoff berth. After seeing the season come to an end in the first round, they have an opportunity to progress in 2026 and are poised to take another step forward.
The program has plenty of confidence and continuity under second-year head coach Taryn Ohlmiller, who is entering her fourth year overall with the program at Islip High School. With a veteran core that has grown up together in the system, there is plenty of excitement surrounding the team as they have a chance to write the next chapter in Islip girls lacrosse.
The foundation of the team is a strong senior class led by captains Caitlin Barnes (Boston College) and Reese Wallace (FSU). Barnes was the engine of the offense in 2025, finishing with an impressive 67 points scoring 44 goals with 23 assists, while Wallace provides leadership and versatility through the midfield and on defense. Islip also brings back a strong offensive group in Teagan Rao (Marist), who posted 38 points, along with Tessa Smith (Merrimack) and Taylor Reising (URI), both of whom add scoring balance and consistency.
Defensively, Islip expects that unit to once again set the tone. Goalie Abbey Dieumegard (Virginia Tech) returns after making 137 saves a year ago, anchoring a defense that prides itself on communication and effort. While the Buccaneers did graduate key defender Sara Geldmacher, the return of experienced defenders and midfield support keeps defense as a strength heading into 2026.
Looking ahead, players such as sophomore Addison Andria, junior Mackenzie Stuck, and senior Olivia Pue are candidates for expanded roles as Islip continues to develop its depth. If the Buccaneers stay connected offensively, maintain their defensive identity, and lean into their senior leadership, Islip has all the pieces to be a tough out every time it takes the field this spring.
The season opener for the Bucs is on 3/18 with a non-league matchup against Wantagh, followed by their opening game against Miller Place on 3/26.
