Anchoring the Huskies: Abby Beran’s Breakout Junior Season Leading UConn’s Defense

For University of Connecticut defender Abby Beran, the 2026 season has become a defining stretch in her junior campaign. The Shoreham-Wading River native has emerged as a cornerstone of the Huskies’ defense, pairing high-level play with leadership as one of the unit’s most dependable voices. Earlier this month she was she was named the IWLCA Defensive Player of the week, while also being named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on three different occasions this season.

What’s fueled Beran’s success is a simplified, confident approach to the game. “I think what’s really clicked for me is trusting my instincts and playing decisively,” she said to the LILJ. “I’ve simplified my approach—just focusing on executing the game plan and doing my job at a high level instead of overthinking.” That mindset has allowed her to play faster and more freely, becoming a disruptive force capable of taking attackers out of their rhythm.

Now a captain, Beran’s role has grown significantly since her early days at UConn. “As a freshman, I was more focused on just doing my job, but now I’m thinking about the defense as a whole,” she explained. “Making sure we’re organized, helping direct traffic, and putting teammates in the best positions to succeed.” Her development into a leader has been just as important as her on-field performance, as she’s embraced the responsibility of being a consistent communicator and a player her teammates can rely on.

That leadership shows up in her mindset every time she takes the field. “One thing my coach always says is that defenders are in control, and that’s something I really carry with me,” Beran said. “I go into every game knowing we can dictate the pace and take attackers out of what they’re comfortable doing.” Her focus on discipline, physicality, and the finer details—footwork, positioning, and communication—has helped define her game, even in areas that don’t always show up on the stat sheet.

Beran credits the Huskies’ defensive success to the group’s chemistry and trust. “I think the biggest thing has been how connected we are as a unit,” she said. “We’ve spent a lot of time learning how each other plays… which builds a lot of trust on the field.” That cohesion, combined with a “next-play” mentality, has allowed the unit to stay composed and consistent throughout the season.

With the season still unfolding, Beran remains focused on both individual growth and team goals. “Personally, I just want to keep improving every day and continue to be someone my team can rely on,” she said. “For our team, we have high expectations—we want to win the Big East regular season and championship and make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.”

With her confidence, command, and leadership anchoring the back line, Beran isn’t just putting together a standout junior season—she’s aiming to help position UConn as a contender as the postseason approaches.
