No. 20 Ranked Long Beach Lady Marines Team Preview

Coming in at number 20 in the LILJ preseason rankings are the Long Beach Lady Marines. They had a sub .500 record last season at 5-9, but a strong finish to the season saw them make a run to Nassau Class B semifinals. Their run came to an end at the hands of South Side. Head Coach Rachel Ray had a very young team, and now that they are back a year older with some experience under their belt, they have a great chance to be right in the mix with some of the top teams in Nassau.

The team is led by star-studded junior Delaney Radin (Florida). The All-County attacker has an incredible skill set and put up a whopping 82 points as a sophomore. Out of those 82 points, 58 of them were assists. She has unbelievable vision and awareness to know where teammates are and is a great finisher around the crease. Radin is joined by fellow attacker Sky Kilfeather who is just an eighth grader. Kilfeather saw plenty of playing time last season and recorded 16 points. Long Beach plays in the LILJ Winter League where Kilfeather leads the team with 21 points. Expect to hear her name a lot not just this season but in the years to come.

The midfield unit is also young but extremely talented. Delaney Chernoff is entering her freshman season and had 28 points a year ago as only an eighth grader. Chernoff is a lefty and has an extremely quick shot and is also a tremendous finisher around the crease. Her teammate Ava Main is a sophomore, who saw plenty of action in 2021, tallying 12 goals and 14 points. In the box league Main is third on the team with 17 points. Senior Cate Miller (UMass) is the veteran returning to the midfield unit and is a ground ball machine that is sure to create extra possessions for her team. She leads all players in the box league with 34 ground balls.

Expected to start between the pipes is senior goalie Sarah Gusler (Johnson and Wales) who made 107 saves last season. Sophomore Emily Backlin is the backup and has split time with Gusler in the box league and has a save percentage just under 50%.

The majority of the team remains intact, but two key players from last year’s team that graduated are attackers Reagan Martinsen and Cyla Timperio. They were big on the offensive end, combining for 44 points.

Long Beach definitely has a tough schedule against some elite Nassau County Contenders. This will be a great opportunity to see where they stack up with some of the premier teams. Here are the Marquee matchups this season!
