No. 17 Ranked Syosset Braves Team Preview

After a 2021 season that saw Syosset make it to the Class A Long Island Championship, the Braves are hoping that this year they can make it all the way back and finish the job. They beat Farmingdale to get to the LIC where they were defeated by Northport by just a single goal. They are led by Head Coach John Calabria and have always been a significant contender in recent years. Calabria believes that they have a great core of returners matched with an excellent group of newcomers that will mesh nicely.

The team lost a number of players that played big roles in their success, but have a lot of returning upperclassmen that will step up in their absence. The attack unit will be headlined by junior lefty Adam Giovinco and senior Ryan Voight. Giovinco recorded 13 points last season as a sophomore. Voight is at his best when he is playing from X. The loss of three All-County attackmen, AJ Alexander, Danny Garone and Joe Bueti means they will be the ones dictating the offense this year. Among the returning players to the midfield unit are All-County junior Dylan Stadler (Marist) and senior Tyler Berch. Stadler has a great lacrosse IQ and a great burst of speed. Expect them to both increase their numbers now that the team is without 2021 graduates Ethan Colter and Nick Accardo who combined for 32 points last season.

Defensively the team will be anchored by All-County defenseman Luca Cutolo, AJ Zuleta and Logan Friedman with goalie Zach Finkelstein (Binghamton) playing between the pipes. Last season Syosset had a very stout defense that allowed only eight goals per game. Finkelstein replaces All-County goalie Joey Greco who had a 64% save percentage. Defensemen Devin Lefkowitz and Jayson Singer are two 2021 graduates that played a pivotal role in the team defense.

FOGO Luca Accardo (High Point), also returns this season after having a big 2021 season and will have a major impact this year.

The Braves have three young guns, Ethan Hart, Zach McPhee, and David Disque that could possibly get playing time this season. McPhee plays midfield while Hart and Disque play a combination of midfield and attack.

The schedule for Syosset has some important games against other potential contenders in Nassau County. Notable home games they have are against Garden City (3/29), Farmingdale (5/6), and Massapequa (5/13). A few of their big away games include at South Side (3/25), at Cold Spring Harbor (4/1), and at Port Washington (4/29).

The program has had some recent graduates that are now notable alumni and have taken their game to the collegiate level. Here are some recent graduates that made their mark on Syosset Lacrosse:

Joe Cawley ’19 (Stevens Institue)

Jack Monfort ’18 (Yale)

Danny Ochs ’17 (Hofstra)

Mac Okeefe ’16 (Penn State)
