No. 17 Ranked Shoreham Wading River Lady Wildcats Team Preview

This season there’s a new leader at the helm in Shoreham. Alex Fehmel has taken over as the next head coach of the Wildcats. She is looking to get Shoreham into the playoffs where they can make some noise this season. Shoreham was one of the teams that participated in the LILJ High School Winter League where they got a lot of production from both their upperclassmen and underclassmen players. Last spring they went 6-8 and missed the playoffs, but came very close in a number of games against some of Suffolk’s top teams. Out of their eight losses four of them came by a single goal and another loss was by three. This shows that they are on the cusp of becoming a serious contender in the Class C Division if they can turn those close defeats into wins. Coach Fehmel expressed her excitement at getting the opportunity to coach this Shoreham team.

“I am very excited to begin this season as SWR’s new varsity girls lacrosse coach. I am eager to get to know these girls and help them to see all the potential that they have!”

The Wildcats have plenty of faces from last year’s team that are back for the 2022 season, returning all but four players. Four of their attackers that are returning this season are Carlie Cutinella (Wofford), Annie Sheehan, Hannah Kershis (Wingate), and Reese Marcario. Cutinella had 21 points last season as a junior and Marcario also had 21 points last year as just an eighth grader. Kershis and Sheehan combined to tally 23 points. The midfield unit will be led by GraceAnn Leonard (UNC), Abigail Beran (UConn), and Catherine Erb (Dartmouth). This dynamic trio combined for 88 points last year, led by Erb with 41 points.

The defense will be anchored by seniors Alexa Constant (Stony Brook) and Mia Rosati, and junior Brooke Meltcher (Wofford). Goaltending is one area where they may still be trying to figure out who will start, but three goalies that got an equal amount of playing time in the winter league were senior Maggie Harding, freshman Leigha Serio, and eighth grader Gianna Ruggero.

This year Shoreham’s schedule will see them play a lot of elite teams that they came up just short against last year. They will host Rocky Point (4/1), Comsewogue (4/9), and Mt. Sinai (5/7). Some of their away games against top flight competition include West Babylon (3/29), Bayport (4/6), Sayville (4/19), and ESM (5/5).

Throughout the history of Shoreham’s lacrosse program, there have been plenty of players that have left their mark and went on to play at high level colleges. Here are a number of notable alumni from Shoreham.
