Highlighting the Female Long Islanders Playing in the NCAA Tournament

The field is set and we now know which teams will be playing in the NCAA tournament in divisions I, II, and III. So many teams across the board have players that are from the island that have made significant contributions to their team during the regular season and looking to make a deep run in the tournament. Going through all of the divisions, let’s take a look and highlight  Long Island’s own who are playing in the postseason.

Division I

North Carolina– The Tarheels come in as the number one overall seed in the tournament. They have a total of six players from the island. Two of their top players on the offensive end that are from the Island are Jamie Ortega (Centereach), and Sam Geiersbach (West Babylon). Ortega is leading the team in points with 98, and Geiersbach has compiled 49 on the season. The starting goalie for the Tarheels is Taylor Moreno (Huntington) who has recorded 137 saves and a save percentage slightly under 50%. Three other players off the island for the Tarheels are Alexa Gentile (Northport), Maddie Hoffer (Sachem North), and Melissa Sconone (East Islip).

Maryland- The two seed entering the tournament are the Terrapins after a 17-1 season. Two of their key defenders who have played in every game this season are Brianna Lamoureux and Maddie Sanchez, both of Rocky Point. The two have combined for 27 caused turnovers on the season. Also repping the island for the Terrapins are Emily Lamparter (Mt. Sinai), Chrissy Thomas (Riverhead), and Dani Brady (Smithtown East).

Boston College- Landing in the number three seed are the Eagles. This team is filled with players that are from Long Island. The second leading goal scorer on the team is Jenn Medjid (Garden City) with 61 and a total of 83 points. Belle Smith (Westhampton Beach) is another stud from Long Island and is third on the team in points with 72. Cassidy Weeks (Bayport) is also part of the midfield unit and has scored 24 goals this season along with 13 caused turnovers. Kayla Martello (Sacred Heart Academy) has also made major contributions, pouring in 36 goals and 42 points. Five other players from Long Island playing for BC are Summer Agostino (Ward Melville), Courtney Weeks (Bayport), Sophia Taglich (CSH), Hollie Schleicher (Westhampton Beach), and Hunter Roman (St. Anthony’s).

Northwestern- Kendall Halpern (Syosset) and Ally Palermo (Seaford) are the only two players from the island on the team. Halpern has started all 17 games this season and Palermo has started in 16 of the 17 games. Halpern has recorded 18 ground balls and nine caused turnovers on the season, and Palermo has totaled 34 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers.

Syracuse- The fifth seeded Orange are loaded with players that are from the island. These players include Katie Goodale (Riverhead), Natalie Smith (St. Anthony’s), Meaghan Tyrrell (Mt. Sinai), Emma Tyrrell (Mt. Sinai), Hallie Simkins (Harborfields), Hannah Van Middelem (Mt. Sinai), Emma Ward (Babylon), Jenny Markey (Mt. Sinai).

Loyola Maryland- The two Long Island players for the Greyhounds are Regan Kielmeyer (Smithtown West), and Kaitlyn Larsson (Garden City). In 19 starts between the pipes Larsson has a near 50% save percentage with 129 saves.

Florida- A total of 14 players are on the roster for the Gators from Long Island. These 14 players are Emma Panciocco (Riverhead), Sarah Mackey (Garden City), Madison Reilly (Manhasset), Emily Heller (West Babylon), Danielle Pavinelli (Northport), Emma LoPinto (Manhasset), Alexa Waters (Hauppauge), Catherine Flaherty (ESM), Sarah Resnick (Long Beach), Celeste Forte (ESM), Ashley Gonzalez (Dix Hills), Emerson Cabrera (Northport), Janine Suris (Smithtown West), Bella Palagonia (St. Anthony’s).

Stony Brook- Being that they are a Long Island based team the majority of players on the Seawolves are from Long Island. Some of their players that represent the island to watch for in the tournament are Ellie Masera (ESM), Kailyn Hart, Jaden Hampel (West Islip), Rayna Sabella (Mt. Sinai), Clare Levy (Rocky Point), and Haley Dillion (Mt. Sinai).

Southern California- Isabelle Vitale (Cold Spring Harbor), Madison Waters (Bayport), Ella Heaney (Garden City), Kelsey Huff (ESM), Alexis Nibolock (Bayport), Nicole Fanelli (Syosset), Mia Triolo (Harborfields), Danielle Carson (Wantagh), Olivia Dooley (Manhasset).

Virginia- Mackenzie Hoeg (Mattituck), Jaime Biskop (ESM), Maureen Duffy (Westhampton Beach), Megan Gordon (Wantagh).

Rutgers- Sophia Cardello (Massapequa), Victoria Goldrick (Syosset), Alexa Corbin (Miller Place), Makenna Boutin (Wantagh).

Saint Joseph’s- Maggie Davidson (West Islip)

Drexel- Lindsey Dean (Our Lady of Mercy), Jenika Cuocco (Rocky Point)

Duke- Katie DeSimone (St. Anthony’s), Olivia Karner (Northport), Cubby Biscardi (Sacred Heart), Julia Schwasnick (Oceanside), Missy Biscardi (Sacred Heart).

Johns Hopkins- Sam Leva (Half Hollow Hills), Jordan Conversano (Harborfields), Hannah Terry (Cold Spring Harbor), Alayna Costa (Smithtown East), Megan Kielbasa (Riverhead).

Jacksonville- Chloe Hostel (Northport), Emily Seiter (Mt. Sinai), Riley Dash (Harborfields), Dayna Martinetto (ESM), Jennelle Bennardo (Harborfields).

Stanford- Ailish Kelly (Bayport), Liana McDonnell (Garden City), Maddigan Miller (Bayport), Caroline Modiello (Manhasset), Katie McMahon (South Side), Erin Schaffer (Sayville).

Mercer- Hailey Rhatigan (Sachem North).

Fairfield- Sarah Bucher (Ward Melville), Nicolette Lavista (Kellenberg), Kyleigh Tufano (Westhampton Beach), Casey Collins (St. Anthony’s), Caroline Mangan (Locust Valley), Amanda Kozak (Floral Park), Mary Kate Dolan (Garden City).

UMass- Hannah Heller (West Babylon), Kelly Mara (Sayville), Julia Smith (Smithtown East), Ally Murphy (Wantagh), Katherine Cuozzo (Connetquot), Kelsie Callahan (Sacred Heart).

Princeton- Shannon Berry (Ward Melville), Sammy Filippi (ESM), Kate Mulham (Ward Melville), Grace Tauckus (Cold Spring Harbor), Paige Vegna (Cold Spring Harbor).

Notre Dame- Kasey Choma (ESM), Kristen Shanahan (Sachem East), Hannah Dorney (Comsewogue), Meaghan Scutaro (Mt. Sinai), Kirsten Scutaro (Mt. Sinai), Abby Maichin (Huntington).

Michigan- Katherine Galzerano (Garden City), Sophia Denicola (Smithtown East), Melissa Esswein (Syosset), Maya Santa-Maria (Huntington), Erin O’Grady (St. Anthony’s).

Central Michigan- Reagan Martinsen (Long Beach)

UConn- Katherine Parker (South Side), Amanda Moghadasi (Smithtown East), Amanda McMahon (Commack).

James Madison- Sophia Macchia (Massapequa), Maggie Clark (Bayport), Nicole Marshall (Smithtown West), Emma Greenhill (Huntington)

Vermont- Jessica English (Smithtown West).

Division II

East StroudsburgShannon Dent (Connetquot), Mary Fitzimmons (East Meadow), Kiki Fitzpatrick (Sayville), Hannah Campbell (Massapequa), McKenzie Gaghan (Farmingdale). Kiki Fitzpatrick has started all 18 games this season for the Warriors and is second on the team in assists with 41 as well as second in points with 91.

Seton Hill- Annabelle Taylor (Center Moriches), Jaclyn Frank (Hauppauge). Jaclyn Frank plays a major role in the offense for Seton Hill. Playing attack for the Griffins, she is the team leader in points with 109 on the season.

Mercyhurst- Kiera Boettcher (Floral Park) has played in 18 of 19 games this season at midfield and has scored 15 goals. Mackenzie Murphy (Sachem East) started all 19 games for the Lakers this season on defense and is leading the team in ground balls with 44 and is number one in caused turnovers with 31.

Lindenwood- The two players for Lindenwood from the island are Eleanor Kast (Westhampton Beach), and Bridget Considine (South Side). On the offensive side of the ball Considine has compiled 50 goals and 28 assists for 48 points which is the most on the team. Anchoring the pipes as the starting goalie is Kast and she has made 117 saves this season with a save percentage of 45%.

Grand Valley St- Hauppauge’s Olivia Espostito has started every game this season at midfield and has scored 33 goals on the season which was good for fourth on the team.

Stonehill- Molly Mae Hughes (Sacred Heart), Kendall Fressle (Our Lady of Mercy), Sara Faley (Sacred Heart). This trio of Long Islanders all play a pivotal role in the success of Stonehill. Hughes and Fressle are both starting attackers and have combined for 140 points with Hughes recording 78 and Fressle 62. Faley is the starting goaltender and has made 149 saves.

Adelphi- Being that the Panthers play on the island, this team is filled with Long Islanders. A few of their top players on the offensive end are Christina McCabe (Oceanside), Izzy Grant (Sacred Heart), Emily Beier (West Islip), and Kerrin Heuser (Hicksville). These four are top on the team in goals and points. Defensively the Panthers get big production from Kristina Kallansrude (Jericho), Kasey Flavin (Oceanside), Alexandra Beebe (Mattituck), and Kailey Broderick (Harborfields).

Mercy- Just a little bit north of the Island, the Mavericks also have a number of players on their team that call Long Island home. A few of their top guns include Juliana Keenan (Plainedge), Kerri Cummings (Islip), Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford), Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa), Leena Mousa (Wantagh), Leah Hansen (Harborfields), Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale), and Lindsay Shimborske (Farmingdale).

Queens (NC)- Alexi Flores (ESM), Grace Guglielmo (West Babylon), Rebecca Kinsley (Sacred Heart), Caroline Kraemer (Oceanside). Kinsley has team-high 122 points along with 34 ground balls in 19 games played this season.

Florida Southern- Rylie Rittberg (Mattituck), Sabrina Diaz (Selden), Hailey Daleo (Westhampton Beach), Patricia Werker (St. James), Brittany Iamele (Rocky Point). Daleo leads the team with 55 goals and 74 points in 17 games played. Werker is the teams starting goaltender and has tallied 97 saves on the season.

Wingate- Meghan Higgins (Sachem East), Kaleigh Wilgeroth (Rocky Point), Danielle Scarfogliero (Sachem North), Emily Rongo (Patchogue-Medford), Sam Dilegge (Bay Shore), Emily Blakely (Bay Shore), Nelida Watson (Comsewogue), Megan Biase (Sachem North), Riley Boone (Bay Shore). Scarfogliero has played in 17 of 18 games this season with 9 starts and has recorded 29 points. Biase is the starting goalie for Wingate and has made 108 saves in 17 games played.

Tampa- Erin McLoughlin (Connetquot), Emma McLoughlin (Connetquot), Riley Colemon (Islip), Abby Selhourn (Carle Place), Dani Waters (Hauppauge), Olivia Mott (Farmingdale), Both Mott and McLoughlin have played key roles on the offensive side for Tampa with Mott tallying 49 points and McLoughlin 21.
