Mount Sinai Advances to Another County Championship After Beating Islip

Anytime you hear the number one player in the country is in attendance, especially during a playoff game, everyone gets excited, especially the fans of Mount Sinai. The Mount Sinai Mustangs have been perfect so far this season with a whopping 16 wins and zero losses. Much of their success runs through the electrifying Joey Spallina, the highly touted, number one recruit in the country heading to Syracuse this upcoming fall. Joey, along with his two younger brothers, have been phenomenal all year for the Mustangs with younger brother Jake winning faceoffs and scoring goals, while youngest brother Brett has been a stud close defender.

The Mustangs’ future is bright with young attackmen Cole Marsala and Lucas Laforge combining for over 100 points total. Despite the firepower of the Mustangs, Islip has had three key performers including senior attackmen Jack Lepore, junior attackmen Jack Trovato and sophomore midfielder Matt Ferraro. Starting goaltender Nate Moran has been strong in net for Islip leading to this contest being a must-watch.

The first half was dominated by Mount Sinai as Joey Spallina was a matchup nightmare. He was a problem all night scoring behind the back goals, shoveling passes to his attackmen and feeding the crease with ease. Cole Marsala and Lucas Laforge were extremely productive themselves finding open space and padding the Mustang’s lead. The Mustang’s defense, led by senior Dylan Sagader, was a seriously disciplined unit running a matchup zone. They were able to prevent any Islip attackmen from getting inside and the caused turnovers led to an array of transition opportunities for the Mustangs and they went up 9-1 into the second half.

Islip wasn’t going down without a fight, especially at the faceoff x with stud senior Richie Rindos heading off to Boston University. Rindos was able to cause havoc and muck up ground balls leading to several opportunities for his team in the second half. An increase in energy was much needed and the dynamic duo of Jack Lepore and Jack Trovato provided that spark, combining for three goals in a row to give Islip some life making the score 12-4. Despite the spark and a gutsy goaltending performance from Nate Moran, the Mustangs offense was too much to handle giving them the 15-5 win as they head to the county finals to play Shoreham Wading River.
