No. 20 Ranked Syosset Braves Team Preview

Entering the top 20 in the LILJ top 24 preseason rankings are the Syosset Braves. Led by Head Coach John Calabria the Braves are consistently in the final four of Nassau County Class A, and 2023 was no different as they were in the semifinals where they were defeated by Farmingdale. This season the Braves are one of the nine teams playing in the new boys power conference, and have a team that they hope can take the program to a county final and possibly a Long Island Championship. Syosset was part of the LILJ HSWL for the second straight season as they get ready for what they hope is a successful spring season.

Syosset’s offense lost some key players that were part of the 2023 graduating class which included Dylan Stadler and Adam Giovinco. As they look to fill the void that they each left behind, the offense this season will be headlined by senior Hopkins commit David Disque and sophomore Brody Waxer. The attack/midfielder Waxer has already made a name for himself with the Braves as he enters year three on varsity and comes off a freshman season where he was among the leaders on the island in total points in ’26 class with 63, scoring 44 goals with 19 assists. In the winter league Disque was Syosset’s leading scorer through five games where he scored 17 goals. Among their attack and midfield that also make up the Braves offense this season is Owen Azevedo (face-off/midfield), Josh Chung (midfield), Nick Turner (midfield), Aidan Cleary (face-off), Gio Accardo (attack), and Logan Horowitz (attack).

The defense of Syosset will be a very strong unit once again this season after allowing slightly fewer than six goals per game in 2023. Leading this unit will be juniors Will Cawley (Lehigh), Evan Ostranger and senior Chase Yaris, while the last line of defense in the net looks to be a combination of sophomores Joshua Weisenfeld and Max Glambosky. In the winter league Weisenfeld saw a bulk of the action and compiled 27 saves with a 47 % save percentage in five games.

Nassau Class A has been up for grabs the last few years, with a different team winning the conference each of the last three seasons, and Syosset looks to make it two county titles in the last four years.
