In a matchup between high level club lacrosse vs high level high school lacrosse at the Stony Brook University Indoor Complex, GC Tradition clinched a hard earned 10-7 victory over Connetquot in the LILJ Winter League game, held on the morning of December 3.
The first half of the match was a tightly contested affair, with both teams exhibiting a good pace of play, and by the end of the first 20 minutes it was the T-Birds who had a narrow 4-3 lead. This set the stage for an exciting second half, where the real difference in the game would be made.
GC Tradition rose to the occasion in the second half, outscoring Connetquot 7-3. This shift in momentum was pivotal in securing their victory. Key players for GC Tradition included Ava Borzilleri and Abby Wheeler, and Sophie Deifel who led the scoring efforts with 2 goals each. Wheeler’s two goals happened in a blink as a tie game quickly became a 2 goal advantage for Tradition. Additional goals from Rhode Island bound junior Emerson Goettelmann, Penelope Yaker, and Leigha Zaman further underscored the team’s depth offensive depth. The goalkeeping duo of Keira Desmond and Hayes Hassett was instrumental in this half, with Hassett notably saving 62% of the shots, a significant contribution to the team’s defense.
Connetquot, despite the loss, put up a strong fight. Jamie Elliot the Binghamton commit, and Hayden Murphy were standout players, each scoring 2 goals. Sydney Elizalde who’s committed to Cortland also made a notable contribution with a goal and an assist. All over the ground balls was defender Janna Weltner who led all players with 4. In goal, Adrianna Giommetti and Shannon Morley shared duties, with Morley saving 44% of the shots on goal.
With the victory Tradition takes their 1-0 record to the field in week 2 when they go against Bayport at 10:00 am. Connetquot will be the first team in action this Sunday at 7:00 am when they play against Smithtown East as both teams will be looking for their first win.
