On Wednesday evening in the JV division of the LILJ HSWL the 3rd seeded SA 2027 team faced off against the 6th seeded YJ Duswalt team for a spot in the semifinals of the playoffs. This matchup was controlled by the freshmen from St. Anthony’s as they led this one from start to finish, defeating YJ Duswalt by a score of 13-3 to advance one step closer to the championship game.
In the first half the Friars scored the first seven goals of the game before YJ Duswalt got on the board and ultimately took an 8-1 lead into halftime due to the combination of stout defense and a full fledged effort offensively. The second half saw St. Anthony’s keep their foot on the gas, outscoring YJ Duswalt 5-2 to take this one 13-3 in the rematch from week three of pool play.
The Friars got a hat-trick each from Estee Mihos and Keira Steck to lead the team in scoring while Chloe Mullady added two goals and one assist. Contributing with one goal each were Elena Ciaccio, Beau Davi, Liliana May, Katherine Paul, and Melania Moreo. In the ground ball department the Friars were led by Liliana May and Elena Ciaccio with two ground balls each, as well as two caused turnovers each from Dani Torre and Keira Steck. Among the Friars most valuable assets between the lines and clearing the ball has been Sierra Riepe who was impactful all over the field on the defensive side of the ball. Grace Belmonte protected the pipes tallying five saves with a 62% save percentage.
YJ Duswalt saw their three goals scored by three different players, as Cassidy Ferrara, Carmella Grandiosi, and Norah Golden each recored one goal.
As the Friars advance to the semifinals, they will face Westhampton JV on January 13th at 6:00pm, while YJ Duswalt will face Ward Melville JV in the consolation game on January 13th at 6:45pm.
