Westhampton Rallies for a Comeback Win Against Rocky Point in LILJ Winter League Opener


In a riveting high school winter league lacrosse match to get the 2023-2024 season started, Rocky Point faced off against Westhampton at Stony Brook University’s Indoor Sports Complex. The game, characterized by its intensity and skillful plays between two Suffolk Class C programs, was a showcase of two teams that will be right there in the thick of things come the spring season.

The match began with a marginal lead for the Hurricanes, setting the pace for a competitive first half. Westhampton’s offense initially had the upper hand, but Rocky Point’s defense, spearheaded by Breezy Henke, the UMass commit in the net, was quick to help them respond. Henke made several crucial saves, showcasing her skill set and keeping Rocky Point in the game.

Rocky Point’s offensive efforts were led by the freshman Cadence Adamo and Violet Freebody the Slippery Rock commit, who both scored key goals, demonstrating their skill on the field. Kylie Lamoureux the junior committed to Maryland, with her impressive performance, as she contributed to the team’s offense with two goals to go along with a caused turnover. The Moeller sisters, Kaleigh and McKenzie, were also instrumental in Rocky Point’s attack, with McKenzie Moeller the Wofford commit displaying exceptional playmaking abilities at attack, with five assists and a goal, while Kaleigh, a 2026 standout struck for 4 goals and controlled 3 of 4 draws taken.

Westhampton, not to be outdone, showed remarkable resilience and skill. Reese King, an outstanding player headed to UNC Chapel Hill, was a force to be reckoned with. King scored five goals, driving Westhampton’s comeback in the second half. Contributions also came from Ava Derby, who assisted on a goal, and Madison Maire, who had a notable presence with her assists and a goal.

Future Ivy League Goalie Maya Farnan the Penn commit played a crucial role for Westhampton, making significant saves and keeping the team’s hopes alive. Meaghan Tufano who’s committed to Hofstra, added 2 goals. Lily Graves who’s bound for Binghamton, Ava Derby, and Queens commit Katie Lanning were key players for Westhampton, each scoring a goal, while Brie Provenzano the junior heading to Quinnipiac provided a crucial assist.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with each team taking the lead at different points. Rocky Point led 8-5 at half-time but faced a strong comeback from Westhampton in the second half. The match concluded with a 13-11 victory for Westhampton, a testament to their perseverance and skill.

This encounter between Rocky Point and Westhampton was not just a game but a display of what could lie ahead in the spring season with these two teams likely jockeying for position in the standings.

As for week 2 of the winter league, Westhampton will seek to improve to 2-0 when they face off against the 1-0 South Side Cyclones, and Rocky Point will try to bounce back and earn a win against the St. Anthony’s sophomores at 12:15.
