Michael Weigand Scores Game Winner to cap Massapequa Rally


In the second game of the night on Sunday December 10th in the Boys HSWL, Massapequa and Rust and Gold played in an epic clash that saw Massapequa rally from a 6-4 deficit inside of six minutes remaining win the game 7-6 on the game winner scored by Michael Weigand with under a minute remaining in the game.

The first half was an evenly matched 20 minutes of play with neither team allowing much on the score board. It was a 2-2 game with just over 30 seconds remaining when Hunter Gillis came up with the go-ahead goal to give Rust and Gold a 3-2 lead going into halftime.

In the second half Rust and Gold looked to be building momentum as Nick Haugen came down the field with a step down shot to give them a 5-3 lead. Down the stretch with Massapequa trailing 6-5, Joe Fazio scored his third goal of the game which squared the game at 6-6, and ultimately it was Weigand who called game to give Massapequa they first win of pool play.

The Chiefs also saw notable performances from Jack Garguilo who tallied three goals and four ground balls. The goaltending of Michael Jannotte kept Massapequa in the game throughout as he recored seven saves with a 53% save percentage. At the face-off X Aidan Stanton was 8/14.

Key performances from Rust and Gold came from the two 2027s Roy Testa and Nick Haugen who each had two goals, while Andrew McKenzie delivered seven saves with save percentage of 50%.

These two teams have concluded their three pool play games with Massapequa finishing 1-2 and Rust and Gold ending at 0-3. Both teams will be back in January for the start of the playoffs.
