On Sunday morning, December 10th, at the Stony Brook University Indoor Complex, the Suffolk County teams of Ward Melville and Shoreham Wading River faced off in a captivating match.
After trailing 2-0, Ward Melville responded with a strong pace, ending the first half with a 5-1 scoring run to take a lead into halftime by a score of 5-3.
Continuing their effectiveness, Ward Melville mirrored their first-half performance by adding another five goals in the second half. Shoreham Wading River, despite their efforts and scoring four goals, couldn’t narrow the gap, leading to a final score of 10-7 in favor of Ward Melville.
Ward Melville’s attack which is one of the best on island, delivered once again, as Grace Balocca who’s heading to Villanova was a notable player, scoring 3 goals, while Brown commit Kate Spinks added 2 goals and 1 assist. The midfield line was pivotal between Navy commit Emilia Retzlaff’s 2 goals, and 1 assist, and Marist bound Amelia Pirozzi making big plays on both ends of the field. Ward Meville’s defense was sparked by the Penn commit Peyton Phillips who came away with a game-high 4 takeaways.
For Shoreham Wading River, Lehigh bound junior Morgan Lesiewicz led her team with a 3 goal performance, and Leslie Jablonski came away with 2 caused turnovers. Shoreham Wading River’s Sophia Giangreco also put forth a valiant effort in the net with 6 saves and 2 caused turnovers.
Coming up in week 3 the Patriots will have a chance to improve to 3-0 when they face Comsewogue on Thursday December 14th at 9:30pm. The Wildcats are looking to bounce back against the Spartans at 1:00pm on Sunday December 17th.
