In an intense public vs private school lacrosse matchup, St. Anthony’s 2025 narrowly defeated Sayville with a final score of 11-10 to pick up their first win in pool play.
The Friars established what was a four goal lead in the first half as Hopkins commit Molly Hiney scored the games first goal on an eight meter shot. The 6-2 score that St. Anthony’s had in the first half was their largest lead of the game as it appeared they were going to win this one in a run-away.
Sayville, not to be outdone, rallied back impressively, tying the game multiple times, and taking a one goal lead. Key players like Sophia Buffardi and Michigan bound Sofia Cangelosi played pivotal roles in bringing Sayville back into the game. Each tallied four points with two goals and two assists from Buffardi, and three goals and an assist from Cangelosi. Also adding two goals to the mix was the freshman Dylan McNamara
For the Friars, Hiney was 2/2 on the draw circle, and they also saw hat-trick performances from UNC commit Tess Calabria, USF commit Jenna Binkis, and Maryland commit Megan Kenny. Coming up with two ground balls was the Syracuse commit Julia May O’Connor.
The pinnacle of the game the last few minutes, with St. Anthony’s securing the game-tying goal from Jenna Binkis who then won the ensuing draw, ultimately leading Calabria scoring the game-winning goal assisted by Kenny. The Friars were unphased down the stretch as their supremely talented roster was able to prevail to secure their first win.
In week 3 Sayville will be in action bright and early this Sunday with a 7:00am clash against ESM. St. Anthony’s 2025 will be back at it also on Sunday at 3:15 against Manhasset.
