In a tightly contested game in the JV division at Stony Brook University Indoor Complex, Westhampton JV came away with a close victory over YJ Friedman with a final score of 12-10.
This was a game that was hanging in the balance throughout, as the two teams were squared in a 2-2 game before Jo Derby put the Hurricanes in front 3-2 with just over eight minutes remaining. In the closing minutes of the half in a 5-5 game, Tierney McEntee assisted Lily Johnson for go-ahead goal to give Westhampton a 6-5 lead, but Ella Dragonette came up with a huge ground ball and sprinted to the cage where she scored just in a knick of time to beat the first half buzzer and tie the game at six.
In the second half it was YJ Friedman who scored consecutive goals between Arianna Focarile and Dragonette to give them an 8-6 lead. Westhampton would rally with three straight goals which was capped off on an assisted goal from Fina Dibiasi to Teagan Dorn for a 9-8 lead. After YJ Friedman’s Olivia Leopardi had a strong transition take to the cage to tie it at 9, Derby answered back on an assisted goal by Emma Luzim to once again give Westhampton the lead, and they would hold on for a 12-10 victory.
The Hurricanes were led by Jo Derby’s three goals followed by two goals each from Lily Johnson and Reagan Schindler. Defensively Sofia Amodemo has a game-high three caused turnovers.
YJ Friedman got two goals each from Ella Dragonette, Olivia Leopardi, Arianna Focarile, and Nicole Manolakes, as well as two ground a piece from Sophia Enea and Payton Brzeski.
Coming up in week 3 YJ Friedman will have a double-header Thursday evening against Bayport JV at 5:00 followed by YJ Duswalt at 5:45. For Westhampton they are also in action this Thursday night against Ward Melville JV at 8:00.
