After establishing themselves as a perennial powerhouse in Suffolk Class A, Smithtown West was not surprisingly successful in Suffolk Class B. Despite graduating several stud seniors in 2021, this year’s seniors surpassed expectations leading Smithtown West to an impressive record of 13-5 under Coach Bob Moltisanti. Colin Hansen, Ron Trebing and brother Ryan were the Bulls top performers all surpassing 50 points on the year. Sophomore goalie Dylan Bonasera had a very solid year in net and Smithtown West had success at the faceoff x with Necco Cottage dominating in that department. With newcomer Smithtown winning the thrilling multi-overtime game in the regular season, the Comsewogue Warriors were more than ready for revenge. Michael Katz and Justin Bonacci were the Warriors’ top performers all year combining for over 160 points. James Krieg and Dylan Rocchio were also key contributors in Comsewogue’s success with Kevin Radmann winning faceoffs and pushing transition. On paper, these teams were nearly identical with stars on both sides of the field. This game would definitely prove to be worthy of the highly anticipated preview.

Smithtown West came out quickly with Will Fitzsimons and Carmelo Pace leading the way with a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Despite the firepower Smithtown brought early offensively, none of that would be possible without the brilliance of Necco Cottage at the faceoff x. The second quarter saw Comsewogue steal the momentum with their ferocious defense and determined ride. Matt Sparhuber was a matchup nightmare stripping the ball and pushing transition. Comsewogue was able to score twice leaving the game tied at 3 going into halftime.

The third quarter was a hard fought battle with both teams tallying twice. Michael Katz got the Comsewogue offense going after scoring and Dylan Rochio also contributed. The third quarter ended with yet another tie at 5. The fourth quarter was the Michael Katz show. He scored twice after picking off the goalie and finishing through contact inside. Comsewogue played with intensity and passion leading them to their second straight Class B Suffolk County Final victory with a score of 8-6.
