2024 Gains for Brains Players who Impressed

This past Saturday Cold Spring Harbor High School hosted the annual Gains for Brains tournament organized by Andrew and Laura Rappaport which brought together teams from across the tri-state area for a number of high level competitive games, all while raising awareness and donations for pediatric brain tumors. This year 20 teams took part in Gains for Brains for a total of 10 games with 9 of them featuring a Long Island team taking on a team from off the island. The slate of games got started at 10am and continued throughout the entirety of the day where many of the region’s top high school athletes put their abilities on display for their respective high school programs. With the LILJ on site covering all 10 games, there were plenty of players across each high school graduating class who stepped up and impressed in their game, with many of the upperclassmen committed to various collegiate programs across the country, and underclassmen that are already making an impact on their varsity team. Check out down below the players who impressed this year in each graduating class!

No. 1 Ranked St. Anthony’s Friars Team Preview

Now to the number one team in the LILJ top 24 preseason rankings, it’s the St. Anthony’s Friars who are historically one of the national powerhouses in the country. Last year they were once again CHSAA Champions where they held on for an 8-7 win against Sacred Heart in the championship game. This year the Friars have a new leader in charge as Darcy Messina takes over as first year head coach. The team returns with a very deep and supremely talented senior class, and this winter they showed why they are arguably the top team in the country as they were LILJ HSWL Champions of the AAA bracket.

We get to number two in the LILJ top 24 preseason rankings, and it’s one of the nationally renown programs the Chaminade Flyers. The Flyers are always one of the premier programs both on the island and in the country, and as they do each year they return with an immensely talented team as they look to see where they stack up against fellow nationally ranked opponents, and hope to take the CHSAA title which they have lost the last few years to rival St. Anthony’s.
